Euthanasia - I've had a conversation with a friend....?

I have always thought it's strange that people love their pets enough to put them down when they're suffering and have no quality of life; but if it's a person, we try to prolong their suffering as long as possible. Why can't we give people the same option to end their suffering if they choose to?
