bolboa, cabral, columbus, coronado, cortes, dias, leon, magellan, polo, de la salle and soto were all sponsered by the Spanish crown, well at that time it was the Crown of Castile as there was no Spain. Most of them had contracts directly with Isabella (Queen of Castile)
