Is it possible that what people claim to have discovered...?

Given the number of people that have inhabited the earth before written records were created I believe it is possible that anything was discovered before someone claimed to be the discoverer. The only difference would be that latter and more sophisticated humans wrote it down and spread the knowledge to the rest of the world.
