I just bought a used AT&T Palm Centro...?

I havent upgraded for a media plan but I have the unlimited texting plan... I can't tell whether or not the internet is on but everytime I turn the phone on the symbol for the internet comes up but with no bars... I dont want to upgrade my plan to use the internet, but I dont know how to tell if its using the internet now or not... Help??
